about

Fie Schouten, Jelte Althuis - bass clarinet
Eva van de Poll - violoncello
Tatiana Koleva - vibraphone

The much lauded Polish-Dutch composer Hanna Kulenty (1961) has a large oeuvre to her name, including operas, orchestral works, chamber music and electronic works.

Tap-Blow-Dance4 was written at the request of Fie Schouten for the Dutch 'Basklarinet Festijn'. It has the original instrumentation of two bass clarinets, vibraphone and cello. This raw, feverish piece consists of a single movement lasting more than twelve minutes. In a high march tempo, the music rushes on, locked up in a rudimentary musical space from which it seems unable to escape, despite its dogged and impetuous gestures that are obsessively repeated, including the stamping of the feet by the musicians. But several times, as if by a miracle, the music ends up in other spheres, where there is only room for shimmering long notes, or for an accumulation of open fifths or a melancholic undercurrent of broken C-minor chords. It is this fusion of different atmospheres that gives the piece its enigmatic ambiguity.
