About the miniature:
Octave Cycle is an etude for bass clarinet, based around the interval of
the octave. As soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy once mentioned, the
octave is the most underrated of all intervals, and practicing octaves
on a wind instrument is something most players don’t think of. So here
is an octave etude that works with the incredible range of the bass
clarinet. The piece has a few sections in the beginning and the middle
where the player should “meditate” on the given note, and wander
around the room a bit, filling the space with sound. These intermissions
are meant as “calm” interludes, with a length up to the performer.
The whole piece should be played with a steady pulse, and has a 12/8
feel to it, like a “shuffle”. It needs to groove hard! That also means that
the corners of each phrase should be accented, like in jazz phrasing.
The grace notes should be played a short as possible, with an
aggressive accent.
