about

Fie Schouten - contrabass clarinet

Gérard Grisey (1949 - 1998) was a French accordionist and composer who took lessons from Dutilleux, Stockhausen and Xenakis, among others. He himself became the teacher of dozens of young composers. In much of his work, Grisey strings together musical elements by means of literal repetition or subtle variations. The result is clear, long lines, which retain a rudimentary, almost elusive character due to the lack of melodic elements. Grisey dedicated Anubis-Nout to the memory of his fellow composer Claude Vivier, who was murdered in Paris in 1983. The piece is a diptych, its title referring to two Egyptian gods. Anubis was the jackal-headed god who protected the dead, Nout was the goddess who swallowed the sun every evening and gave birth to her again every morning.

Anubis-Nout was written for contrabass clarinet, the largest member of the clarinet family. The low tones of this instrument sound an octave lower than those of the bass clarinet, which in turn can play an octave lower than the normal clarinet.

In Anubis, it is solid tones in the lowest register that form the core. Their volume changes and they are surrounded by thin figures. Towards the end of the piece, the intensity of the low notes diminishes. At the same time, the space between the notes increases - finally, the music dissolves into a poignant silence.
In Nout, the soft sounds explore ever lower registers. Sounds of noise and other effects provide additional colouring. Nout can be seen as a journey towards the end of the night. The final note is the second lowest note of the contrabass clarinet. An end point that can also be a new starting point.
