about

Fie Schouten - bass clarinet

Holz by Enno Poppe was composed in 1999 for clarinet and
ensemble. It is the first part of the Holz-Knochen-Öl cycle. Composer
Enno Poppe tells a story of growth and decay. Wood is a living and
growing material. The unruliness the bass clarinet can have comes
to the fore, but also the flexibility, jumping from extremely high to
low and subtle changes of color through the use of the microtones.
Poppe made a version for bassoon in 2005 and a version for bass
clarinet solo in 2015, dedicated to me and Richard Haynes.
