about

Fie Schouten - bass clarinet
Marko Kassl - acoordion

The originally Spanish composer Enric Raxach (1932) was born in Barcelona. He studied and worked in Paris, Munich and Cologne, among other places; since 1962 he has lived in the Netherlands. His versatile oeuvre includes a work for bass clarinet & soundtrack, a nonet for nine bass clarinets and Decade, which has the unique combination of bass clarinet and accordion. For Fie Schouten, these are three important works, which will remain part of the repertoire for the bass clarinet.

Decade is a one-movement piece with a clear A-B-A form. During the opening episode, the accordion and bass clarinet play around each other in free figures, the accordion especially thoughtful and still, the bass clarinet more agile. Their gestures seem to originate from the same source. Yet they usually keep some distance from each other, for example, one of them plays a high register and the other a low one, thus creating a strong spatial effect. Sometimes they merge for a moment, but then go their separate ways again, like two dancers who briefly approach each other and then let go. The second episode starts with staccato chords from the accordion in irregular rhythms. Led by boisterous phrases and fragments in the bass clarinet, the music reaches a climax, and then moves on to an elegant question-and-answer game in which both instruments alternate extremely short motifs. After this, the opening episode returns, but in a varied form. A few staccato chords in the middle section bring the work to an abrupt end.
