about

Fie Schouten, Jelte Althuis - bass clarinet
Eva van de Poll - violoncello
Tatiana Koleva - vibraphone

Evan Ziporyn (1959) is an American composer who plays the clarinet and the bass clarinet. He has written a number of pieces for these instruments, which he sometimes performs himself. Connect 4 was composed for the ensemble that recorded it on this CD. It has the same instrumentation as Kulenty's Tap-Blow-Dance4, i.e. two bass clarinets, vibraphone and cello. Ziporyn has indicated that the piece can be performed in any scoring.

The score of Connect 4 has a very special character. It does not contain a single note... only a number of verbal instructions. These instructions are identical for all four performers. The first instruction reads: "Choose a single note (in a single register), play it when you are ready". After playing for a while with that one note and the silence, the players must add a second note. A connection should be made with a note from another performer. Then a third, then a fourth note must be added. Then the process is completed in reverse order. So the players all end up with one note again, which dissolves into silence.

In short, Connect 4 gives the players a lot of freedom. Yet you cannot call it improvisation, the instructions are too specific for that. It is a piece about connecting and disconnecting. Only in utmost concentration - listening attentively to each other - the four players, each with their four notes, can enter into a true connection.
