Fie Schouten bassethorn (track 1), bass clarinet (track 2-5)

March 2020: no concerts, even rehearsals are not allowed. I look in
my drawers with sheet music. First, I start with Monolog by Isang Yun.
This work was premiered in 1983 by my former teacher Harry Sparnaay. Isang Yun is a composer who has been looking for harmony all his life.

This CD would not have been possible without the spontaneous
enthusiasm of sound engineer Arjan van Asselt and Berith Danse,
director of the Plein Theater Amsterdam.

Review Roger Heaton, published online by Cambridge University Press 04 April 2022:
“Enno Poppe-Holz….Schouten is a very strong player who really characterises and projects: to my ears it is a much more interesting and eventful piece than the original ensemble version. One really hears all the detail, the complexity of the repeated rhythmic patterns, the drama of leaping around the registers and the lyrical episodes with microtones: it seems to explore the actual fabric of the instrument – its ‘woodiness’, I guess – as well as what Schouten calls the ‘unruliness’ of the bass……excellent addition to the growing bass-clarinet solo discography.”
